Everyone has heard about English and Spanish bilingualism – but have you ever heard the term Spanglish?

Spanglish refers to the fusion of Spanish and US English grammar, vocabulary and idioms in the linguistic performance of bilingual speakers of these two languages. Since it is formed by a combination of Spanish and English, it is considered to be a hybrid language variety. Its creation is spontaneous, so nobody can claim that he or she has given birth to Spanglish. The use of Spanglish is never formal or official – it is always colloquial and used only in everyday conversations. Furthermore, contrary to what many people think, using Spanglish does not necessarily imply lack of proficiency in either English or Spanish.
