“Bande dessinée” (or BD) stands for “comic strip” in French but is not restricted to humorous stories. BDs are typically distributed by Belgian and French publishing houses and targetting a French-speaking audience. Perhaps the feature which contrasts them with American comics and Japanese mangas is their format. BD “albums” are A4, hardbacked, and the stories are no more than 48 pages. BDs were often published in a magazine and then later reissued as hardbacked albums.
